Congratulations Emily

Emily Nuese exemplifies what it means to be a good steward both, in our school and our community. We can particularly address her contributions in a couple of the organizations we?e a part of. As Chair of the Youth As Resources Board and Co Chair of the MHS Ambassadors for the last 2 years, she has proven that she is not only an idea person but one who has ?utstanding follow through. In 17 years as a youth advisor, I have not seen this caliber of organizational skills.

Emily worked all summer as Chair of the YAR Board. She decided to bring Exec. Board together earlier this summer to make plans and set goals so that we? have a successful year. She developed job descriptions, planned leadership activities and organized fundraising. She? not afraid to get her hands dirty and works twice as hard as anyone to make sure things run smoothly.

Emily has carried out a number of grants for the YAR Board herself. As a sophomore she started Project Warmth working with the JH Student Council where she engaged the entire school in making blankets for babies of needy families. To give you some idea of what that entailed she was in charge of all funds, developed a budget, implemented a plan, bought and distributed the supplies to make fleece baby blankets for teen moms. She then donated them to the hospital, Heart to Heart, the MACCI House and the Ronald McDonald House in Sioux Falls. When the funding was over, not to worry, Emily found other sources to fund her project which is now in its 3rd year.

In another grant, Project Exploration, she paired with Kim Homan, and worked for months with pre-school and young elementary students after school. They developed strategies to help them build on their large and fine motor skills, learn to count their numbers and money, read stories and even learn about our universe. Her lesson plans rival some of our teachers.

She values her education and those that have pushed her to be her best, which is why she teamed with a friend and PTA to do a Teacher Appreciation Grant giving out surprises to ?ll teachers, staff and janitors each day for a week the last 2 years. She did a wall highlighting staff, their interests, favorite books, information about their family. Treats were not your run of the mill wrapped candy, but home-baked goods artfully displayed in lined baskets.

As Co Chair of the Ambassadors the last two years, she has helped 475 students feel a bit more welcomed and supported the 175 MHS Ambassadors who gave freely of their time to make our school an inviting place.

And while that seems like quite an achievement, add to that that she is head of yearbook, she? V. Chair of the National Honor Society, Jr. Volunteer at the hospital, helps at Jane? Child Care, tutor, vacation bible school, Marshall Acts, BPA, Yes I Can, Jr. Rotarian and class secretary. She also started a day care at church and is a catechist and I could go on. This list is not superficial; the names represent ?ctual involvement in organizations. Emily Nuese? work and follow through are exemplary! A rough estimate would tally her volunteer hours at 1525 but I believe this number is far greater in reality.
